Basic Scripture:
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. (Genesis 1:1-3 NKJV)
Message:
For centuries, believers have been captivated by the profound mystery held in the opening lines of Genesis, the first book of the Bible. This passage introduces us to the central character of the entire Bible, God. In the Hebrew language, the name used here for God is ‘Elohim’, which reveals the tremendous power of God. It comes from the root word ‘El’, meaning ‘strong one’ or ‘mighty one.’
Elohim unveils the fundamental attributes or characteristics of God. He is the supreme deity who exhibits His might through His creations, demonstrating that He is the eternal creator and sustainer of the universe. The words of Elohim brought order, light, and life into existence, which revealed God as the creator. He crafted the heavens, the earth, and all living creatures with precision. Each act of creation reflects His wisdom, purpose, and attention to detail.
God is not just the creator; he is also the pillar that holds up the universe. Every star, being and molecule is being held together by the power of God. The force that created the universe is responsible for its sustainability.
The eternal nature of God is affirmed in the first verse of the Bible. According to the Cambridge online dictionary, eternity denotes time that never ends or that has no limits. Elohim is the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end of everything. For the universe to exist, God had to create it, and before he could do that, he had to already exist.
Elohim establishes the fact that God is triune. This fact was not fully discovered until the New Testament, when it became known that God is the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The foundation for God’s redemptive plan, leading ultimately to the coming of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, was laid down in the Old Testament . When Jesus appeared, He fully unfold all hidden mysteries. After his mission on earth, Jesus ascended into heaven and fulfilled his promise by sending the Holy Spirit to dwell in those who would believe in him.
The God who created order from chaos is capable of bringing order to our world. Elohim is the only God worthy of our unwavering trust and dependence. The universe He has created is a showcase of His strength and mightiness. This great power that no one can restrain is characteristic of God, based on His name Elohim.
Food For Thought:
The name Elohim signifies His unlimited power, while His actions reveal His creative authority.
